Clare's teaching is informed by her experience of many years of study and working with different teachers, as well as from working with her own health conditions. She has come to realise more and more the power of yoga to heal by teaching a strong, yet steady and gentle unfolding into the postures with deep breath awareness. She emphasises the importance of letting go and allowing the body to relax into the postures, so that the practice becomes a 2-way thing: directing the body to stretch, and then allowing the body to relax and release naturally. There is a balance between effort and relaxing; just as there is between working down or grounding and lifting up or stretching up out of and elongating. In each pose she focuses first on lengthening the spine with deep breath awareness; the body then works around this, unfolding and stretching naturally into the position. Although emphasis is on the spine there is a constant awareness of the whole body right through to the extremeties and with this work and awareness a much greater and more natural unfolding will occur.Clare draws on her knowledge of the meridians and acupressure points from Traditional Chinese Medicine, using this to increase the benefits of yoga and its healing potential. She is fascinated by the very strong connections and similarities between these and the nadis and marma points of Traditional Indian Ayurvedic Theory. In this she sees a very close connection between the pratices of yoga and reflexology; where yoga stretches the lines, ie: meridians or nadis; and reflexology pushes the points, ie: acupressure or marma points. In this way she likes to work with both practices to create an all-round healing art. Benefits By maximising the body's potential for both invigorating exercises and deep relaxation a profound healing effect may be achieved. This will benefit many conditions and especially those that are stress related. Yoga may help: For people with specific pathologies Clare would recommend at least one initial 1:1 session, in which an in-depth consultation on health and lifestyle is included. For the past 13 years Clare has been teaching both open and private classes, primarily in London. She has taught in many health clubs and one of her most fulfilling classes has been working with physically disabled people. Now she teaches both general, all-level 'drop-in' classes and private or one-to-one for more specialised work. She also teaches day workshops and weekend retreats which consolidate the practice at a deeper level. ![]() Classes General, all-levels 'drop-in' Brockwell Park Lido, Dulwich Road, London SE24 Mondays 6.30-8pm; 8.15-9.45pm £10/£8 concession Please note that there will be no class on Bank Holiday August 30th as the Lido closes at 6pm.
